Bluesky Video Download Not Working? How to Find the Cause
Troubleshoot invalid links, missing videos, rate limits, and MP4 downloads that fail even when the preview works.
If a Bluesky video will not download, first identify where it fails: submitting the link with Parse, playing the preview, or saving with Download MP4. Each step can fail for a different reason.
Start with these checks
- Open the original post on Bluesky and confirm it still contains the intended video.
- Copy the individual post URL again. A profile link, screenshot, or external video URL will not work.
- Open the downloader in a normal browser tab, paste the link, and select Parse.
- If a result appears, confirm the author and thumbnail before selecting Download MP4.
- Check your browser's downloads list and available storage before retrying.
Errors while parsing a link
| Message or symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid Bluesky post URL | The link should look like https://bsky.app/profile/<handle-or-did>/post/<post-id> | Copy the URL from the individual post, without surrounding text |
| Account does not exist | The account handle may be incorrect or outdated | Open the post again on Bluesky and copy its current link |
| Post not found | The post may have been deleted or be unavailable to the public lookup | Confirm the original still opens; the tool cannot restore deleted posts |
| Post does not contain a video | The post may contain images, an external link, or a quote of another post | Open the original post that has the native video attachment |
| Too many requests | Bluesky has rate-limited a lookup | Wait at least a minute before trying again; recovery may take longer |
| Bluesky returned an error or unexpected error | An upstream request may have failed, timed out, or returned unsupported data | Retry later; check whether another public native-video post works |
A quoted post with a video in its own attachment can be supported. A post that only quotes someone else's video is a different case: use the link to the original video post.
The preview works, but Download MP4 fails
The preview uses an HLS streaming playlist. The download button makes a separate request for the source media file, so success at one step does not prove the other will work.
If the download opens an error page, the source file may be unavailable or the upstream media request may have failed. Return to the downloader and parse the original post again. If the error persists, try later rather than repeatedly clicking the button. A preview is not a promise that a downloadable source file remains accessible.
For advanced workflows, Copy HLS Playlist copies a streaming URL. It does not download an offline video, and renaming a playlist to .mp4 will not convert it. See the MP4 and HLS guide.
The download started, but I cannot find the file
Check the browser's download list for a completed or interrupted transfer. The suggested filename is bluesky-<post-id>.mp4, though your browser may rename duplicates.
On a computer, check your configured download folder. On iPhone, check Files before Photos. On Android, check the file manager before the gallery. Use the mobile guide for detailed steps.
If you have a partial or empty file, check storage and connection stability, then retry the download. Do not assume a file is complete just because its name ends in .mp4.
The browser blocks the download
Read the browser's warning before taking action. Do not disable Safe Browsing, install a download manager, or provide Bluesky credentials to bypass a failed download. Google explains common warning categories in its Chrome download guidance.
A managed school or work device may restrict downloads. Follow the device's policy. If the page is running inside another app's browser, try opening it in your normal browser. This site's download flow does not require pop-up permissions.
What to include when reporting a problem
Use the site's contact page and include the exact error text, browser and device, and whether the failure happens during Parse, preview, or Download MP4. If appropriate, include a public example post that reproduces the issue. Never send passwords, cookies, recovery codes, or private account information.
